Learning drums quickly requires focused practice, the right tools, and an effective strategy. Loudlands started as a drumming school in 2015. Drums are our bread and butter and we’ve worked with thousands of drummers over the years.
Time spent practicing is the only thing that will truly offer the fastest path to learning the drums. It’s not the most exciting answer, but it’s the truth. If you spent 8 hours daily practicing, you would progress very quickly. You can improve the efficiency of that practice time by doing some basic things: studying with a teacher, keeping a practice journal, recording video and audio of yourself. But generally, it’s a basic equation.
Unfortunately, practicing that much is often unrealistic for people. This is especially true for adults and beginners.
We wanted to find a way to help busy people make more progress with their drumming. So we created a unique curriculum and group class called Drummer’s Roadmap.
With a structured format that allows you to study at home and progress at your own pace, you can maximize your learning efficiency and have the healthy accountability of a group. It’s also way more fun that way!

Absolutely, many amazing drummers are completely self taught. John Bonham, Dave Grohl, and Ringo Star are all self taught! The biggest key to teaching yourself drumming is to get comfortable playing along with music. All three of these drummers used to drum along to records to learn. Our founder Kyle Harris used to do the same as well!
You can also use Youtube as a means to learn the drums. But, we will caution you when choosing that path.
The biggest thing you get when studying at a school and working with teachers is curation of material and feedback loops. Youtube will throw a million things for you to practice. But how do you know what the perfect next thing to practice and develop is? How do you know you’re even playing the material from the video correctly? You could be developing some bad habits and technique that you’ll have to revise later on.
So yes, you can teach yourself. But learning is much more efficient when it’s from experts who’ve been where you are and know how to get you to become the drummer you imagine.
-
Not at all! Many people begin playing later in life and go on to enjoy it immensely, whether as a hobby or even professionally. Here’s why:
As an adult, you likely have specific reasons for wanting to learn—whether it’s playing in a band, mastering a new skill, or just having fun. This focus keeps you motivated.
Adults tend to be better at structuring their time and practicing consistently, which can accelerate learning compared to younger students.
Drumming is an excellent outlet for stress and a great way to get into "the zone." It’s fun, therapeutic, and physically engaging—perfect for adults looking for a creative release.
When starting to learn drums in your 30s make sure you start with the basics and stay patient. Learning an instrument takes time. The process of getting better and more fluent on the instrument is the exciting part. Most importantly, setting up a comfortable practice routine will be the healthiest thing you can do. Just 15-30 minutes per day can make a massive impact on your drumming.
At Loudlands, we teach a huge group of adult beginner drummers. So rest assured you’re not alone in your pursuit! See what some of our adult drum students have to say about their experience picking up drums later in life. Hear their stories.

Heck yeah we do! It’s important to develop our drumming abilities through listening, watching, and reading. Sheet music is the most efficient tool that will enable you to self manage your drum learning over time. Also, once you understand how it works it will allow you to communicate with other musicians more freely, which is very cool.
In our opinion, every drummer at Loudlands should learn to read sheet music. It just needs to be balanced in your complete practice to make sure you’re also using your ears.
We even developed our own beginner drumming curriculum and a group class, Drummer’s Roadmap, to help beginners learn the fundamentals of drumming. And yes, it definitely includes learning to read music.
