William Thomas
What do you teach at Loudlands?
I teach guitar and bass
When did you start playing?
I started playing guitar when I was 5 years old
What's your favorite aspect of music or your instrument?
My favorite thing to do is write and compose music. There are no limits to creativity and ideas in this domain !
Who are some of your favorite bands/musicians and why?
I listen to a lot of different stuff, going from classical symphonic music to prog metal. However, my biggest guitar inspirations are Frank Zappa for his vision on improvising solos, and Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple and Rainbow) for being the first guitar hero to merge heavy metal, blues and classical references in his songs. As far as bands, I love the british 70s sound of Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes; but at the same time I listen to Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree or Tool !
What are some of your current and/or past music projects?
While studying at Berklee, I founded my own band called "The William Thomas Orchestra" and we released an EP and a single. In September 2023 I joined a band called "Unruly Few" and we are releasing two singles this fall and an album in February '25. On the side I also produce and mix for artists
How would you describe your music and playing style?
I try to be a jack-of-all-trades. Depending on the style, the instrumentation, the people I'm playing with, and the space I'm allowed to have with the guitar I try to adapt as much as possible. On the other hand, the music I compose is usually full of humor in its lyrics and contains a lot of improvisation sections and open parts to let the band shine together and build a common vision
Can you please describe your gear of choice?
My main guitar is a black Gibson SG from 2008. I recently got a Fender Vintera II 60s style stratocaster but I don't use it as much. For amps, I converted to the dark-side of amp sims and I use a Fractal Axe-FX, live and in the studio, usually replicating Tweeds, Plexis and Dumbles.
Any general advice you'd like to give to beginner musicians or someone looking to get started?
Find your purpose and your "why". Guitar can get frustrating sometimes, and pushing through these obstacles will eventually make you a better musician. And if you clearly know why you started and why you want to learn the instrument, you will always make progress.
Aside from playing/making music, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?
I love sports. I follow rugby, soccer, boxing and basketball a lot. I also enjoy literature and other forms of arts as they bring me inspiration for music.
If you were battling a physically identical but evil android version of yourself on top of a skyscraper during a thunderstorm and someone miraculously intervened, how would they know which one was the real you?
The real guy has a French accent he can't get rid of.
