Nick Prato
What do you teach at Loudlands?
Guitar, Bass, Music Production
When did you start playing?
I got my first guitar at age 8.
What's your favorite aspect of music or your instrument?
My favorite thing about the guitar is its incredible versatility. The range of sounds it can produce is truly vast. As I’ve delved deeper into sound design and building a pedalboard, I’ve found it endlessly inspiring to explore and push the boundaries of what this instrument can do. From traditional tones to super experimental textures, the guitar feels like a limitless canvas for creativity.
Who are some of your favorite bands/musicians and why?
My first introduction to rock guitar was Led Zeppelin I, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Some of my all-time favorite artists include The War On Drugs, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, Steely Dan, and Dire Straits. What draws me to these artists is their ability to blend incredible songwriting with stellar musicianship. My number one guitarist of all time is Eric Johnson, whose beautiful playing and technical perfection continues to inspire me.
What are some of your current and/or past music projects?
I’m an independent artist pursuing a music career under my own name, Nick Prato. I release music regularly and frequently perform live here in the Northeast! I also love working as a session musician, collaborating with other artists on their projects, both live on stage and in the studio. Currently, I perform as a guitarist and vocalist with the bands of Nora Meier and Brady Dallas Jones in and around the Boston area.
How would you describe your music and playing style?
I would describe my playing style as one that serves the song. I grew up focused on technique and speed, and while I still thoroughly enjoy playing in that style, I’ve learned to appreciate the power of playing with clarity and intention. For me, it’s about finding the right balance between technicality and emotional expression, ensuring every note supports the music.
Can you please describe your gear of choice?
My main guitar is a Fender Jazzmaster, which I've been playing exclusively for the past few years. I also frequently use Fender Stratocasters, and for some classic '80s shredding, my Kramer Baretta with a Floyd Rose is a go-to. I run a pretty extensive pedalboard through a Fender Deluxe Reverb—I'm definitely a Fender guy at heart!
Any general advice you'd like to give to beginner musicians or someone looking to get started?
My best advice for beginners is to listen to as much new music as you can. Go to concerts if you can, or even just watch live performances of your favorite artists on YouTube. Feeling inspired is crucial when learning an instrument. If you find a sound, genre, or playing style that really resonates with you, carry that with you as you start your journey. Staying inspired is key, no matter how you choose to keep that spark alive.
Aside from playing/making music, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?
Apart from music, I’m a die-hard Boston sports fan, a big-time foodie, a movie lover, and a proud Star Wars nerd.
If you were battling a physically identical but evil android version of yourself on top of a skyscraper during a thunderstorm and someone miraculously intervened, how would they know which one was the real you?
